Mindful with your own garbage …
Ever realized that all the waste we have in this world is due to our own consumption? It is our
own responsibility to take care of this, to take care of Mother Nature who has to deal with all
this waste herself. In India you see garbage everywhere … due to a lack of proper waste
management.
Thosamling would like people who are visiting and/or staying in their community to be mindful
about the waste sensitive products we are using. Plastics, metals, aluminum, batteries and other
kind of waste; products which are not naturally degradable have to be reduced, reused and/or
recycled as much as possible to safe our Mother Earth.
These three simple rules to reduce waste are known as the 3Rs:
Reduce: Use fewer things on a daily base
Reuse: Instead of throwing away things like plastic bottles and bags, reuse them for storage
Recycle: Collect and sort segregate materials like paper, plastic, glass and metals to be converted
into new products.
Pollution in the Himalayas …
Pollution is caused by the unmindful disposal of waste onto the ground or into rivers and lakes.
Due to a lack of proper waste management in the Himalayas pollution is becoming a big
problem. Historically, most communities used organic materials made of plant products. With
modernization came a shift to using materials like, plastic, glass and aluminum. Such materials
are synthetics which mean that they do not degrade easily in the environment and often release
harmful chemicals into the air as they degrade which leads to long-term pollution.
Traditionally in the Himalayas, almost everyone practiced the 3R’s as a way of life. These days,
people are less likely to do so.
Waste management in Thosamling …
We are losing our responsibility for and our consciousness with regard to our dependency of
Mother Nature. Thosamling would like to bring this back to the people by an active waste
management within their community.
In India you see garbage everywhere in the rivers, lakes, streets, fields … where to start? Let’s
start within our own community and take our own responsibility for the waste we are producing.
Let’s not add to the problem by increasing the garbage in this Himalayan area more as
necessary. Thosamling wants every single residence, employee of or visitor in their community
to take care of their own plastics, metals, batteries and other garbage they bring inside.
What can we do?
Reduce: Before leaving your country, think clearly about what you are bringing into India and
what you are buying here and bring inside the Thosamling community. For not degradable
materials or materials which are not reusable or recyclable within our community, we would
like to ask you to return these materials to your country where systems for waste management
are more in place.
Some tips…
●Bring solar based tools instead of battery based. Solar torches are available in the
Western World.
●Reduce the amount of shampoo, toothpaste and other cosmetics, so that less bottles,
boxes etc. will be “disappearing” in the garbage pile.
●Thosamling offers fresh snacks and bread without any plastic wrapping. Please consider
buying these more healthy snacks instead of factory food wrapped in plastic.
Reuse: Find effective ways to reuse the waste, you think you can’t avoid to bring in.
Thosamling is open for any suggestions to make waste useful again. We have started some
projects within our community, like.
●building bird houses from our kitchen oil bottles …
●creating colorful covers for mobile or laptop, or else… from soft waste plastic
●twining soft plastic into colorful table mats, dishes, boxes etc…
●turning soft plastic around robes and a beautiful curtain arises …
●filling cushions with shredded plastic …
Recycle: In India and also within Thosamling community recycle possibilities are limited. We
would like to ask all our visitors, residents, employees, volunteers etc to take difficult to reuse
and reduce waste back to your country and find a way to recycle there.
